Lake Country, British Columbia - Beelineweb.com owners Lauren and Ched Gaglardi are making a difference in their community by embarking on a project to 'build green'. After outgrowing their current office, it was an easy decision for them to move their search marketing company to a location that is on par with their high standard of environmental and social values by building a 'green' office.

Lauren and Ched officially began their green building journey in January 2008 when they purchased the property for their dream office. Located in the heart of Winfield, BC, the property will hold a 7300 square foot office, surrounded by approximately the same amount of garden space, complete with a pond and a huge variety of greenery, from trees and vines to flowers, vegetables, and herbs.

"Our decision to build a green office stems from our commitment to operating the business in a way that meshes with our social and environmental values," explained Lauren. "By building green we also hope to make a positive impact on our staff, as well as the community. We hope other businesses will see that building green can be done beautifully and cost effectively."

The office is set to be completed by the summer of 2009, and is being built to the certification standards of the Canada Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System. This system takes into consideration sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality, as well as innovation and design. The project is being headed up by architect Jim Meiklejohn of Meiklejohn Architects Inc., who was the first in the BC interior to receive LEED accreditation.

Some of the environmentally-friendly details being researched for possible use in the office are recycled or renewable building materials, such as recycled-glass countertops, heating by geothermal energy, and avoiding or reducing the use of off-gas products and anything that is a known carcinogen. The installation of dual flush toilets is also being considered to minimize water use.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to add more to our current environmentally-conscious practices, such as using recycled paper, composting, and buying green cleaning products," said Lauren. "It basically comes down to living our values and putting our money where our mouth is."
